I will be your voice
I will be your memory

Because now that we
are outside
away from nurses and
residents

I can narrate for you
a farm you once took me to
where the miniature horse
was almost as big as me
and the big white dog
could have been a stallion

But no the pooch was a girl
you explained
as you hugged a creature
who you said was more
emotional like me:

a 60-year-old man holding
the hand of an 85-year-old
wheelchaired woman outside
of a brick nursing home

across the street from
an abandoned gas station

finally seeing
the animals that are waiting

finally letting go
of what I never wanted
to stop holding
