Heart broken

Sandip Saha

I asked the moon, ‘Give me a kiss’
it covered itself with dark clouds

I composed a poem for somebody
it reached her late, no reply

I worked hard for an institution
it threatened to sack me in return

I was a child of mere twelve years
my relatives used me as a laborer

bringing ration, running pump for water
collecting rents from tenants were my jobs

uncle used to get his clothes pressed by me
to save his money in the laundry

when he fell sick asked me to carry his stool
after properly packing it for pathological tests

I got scholarship for my education
he borrowed that money and never returned

I was hospitalized for carrying out operation
my employer did not sanction leave, I lost money

I am a lone poet within my extended family and friends
nobody reads my poems making me heart broken.
