Breaking Out

Ian Mullins

You can take it for granted
that this prison cell
you’re life-sentenced into
has a rope doubled up
under the bed;
that you can fleece
these high walls,
puncture barbed wire
and crawl through sewers

never doubting
that when the wire is cut
you’ll find yourself
in a change of clothes,
with car keys and sailing shoes;
whatever you need to leave behind
that tired old cell
and let your body do the time
while you’re clean as a whistle,
over the wall and on the run.

Maybe this time the dogs
won’t find you; maybe this time
the new guard with the old face
won’t be waiting at the border
to say welcome home,
here’s your old cell:
just the way you left it.
