Post-Pandemic Barstool

Daniel Bliss

If you’ve got time,
can I pour out the last two years?
I haven’t learned how to work
through them properly.

I’ve grown tired of speaking
to walls of my home,
an audience of red bricks,
answering with silence.

From opening to close of this Fed Hill bar
would you mind if we fooled ourselves
into thinking we’re falling for each other?

Maybe that way, it’ll seem normal
to confess so casually.
I’ve always been better with strangers
than friends.

In the neon orange hue of a Natty Boh sign,
neither of us look on the edge
of losing youth the way we truly are.

When we reach the end of honesty
we’ll walk away from Maryland barstools
with nothing more than lighter shoulders
and a name-deep connection.
