On sweaty summer
Mornings as a kid
I’d get up and plead
To the other boys
“Come out and play”
Bikes forts football

Now at an art opening
So much unctuous
Strutting amongst
Wine and cheese
Fleeting acquaintances
Vacuous conversations

But more so in
Increasingly transient fragments
Awkward incomplete anxious
I am here and gone
They are here then gone
And it is all too much

I’ll vanish – a monk rarely
Seen coming or going
Walk my cloister amidst
Silent pillared saints
Inaction – wu-wei
My singular ambition
