The Christian kings
Sent their young men
Knights priests soldiers
Paris to Palestine
On distant crusades
(Was it all for God’s love?)
Armor and blood
Glinted in the desert sun
In battles of fanatics
A slaughter over relics
Over slight distinctions
Jesus or Muhammad
Their bones were left
To bake in the sand
As usual women
And children died
For pretentious doctrines
As usual more than
A thousand years later
(Our deadly repetition)
The selfsame blood
Christian or Islamic
Our tin chariots our
Mindless drones conquered
(Or so we thought)
The sad streets
Of Baghdad and Kabul
Another occupation a tally
A preoccupation a toll
Not teddy bears
Candles wreaths or taps
Flags and flags and flags
Nor impersonal virtual
Thoughts and prayers
Interviews on local news
Nor an assignation of hero
Assuage our collective folly
Our absurd suffering
