Family arguments

Diana Becket

wait as blades hidden
on a path where the sun’s
glare is shadowed by circles
of evergreen leaves
but rays glisten on hewn granite
steps, the edges chisel sharp
against leg skin
and drilled rock channels catch
grit-polished pebbles,
glide-chutes for shoes
to slide to the brink,
where the drop
is cliff sheer.

The path has rock
handholds embedded
in the mountainside, roots pack
the soil, held in place by tree trunks:
leverage to avoid conflict,
anchors to pull against a lurch
to the steps’ knife rims
and a fall into unprotected space,
but slippery as chipped stone
screes for my feet
to grip.
