the limits of language

Brian Lee

we met, three friends and
an old teacher: bought
each a coffee, folded our
bags, sat down. embraced
the stimulants of caffeine
and long-lost conversation,
lingered at the border
where language ends, and
knowing silence prevails.
it was a scene almost dreamlike:
circuitous paths converging
to the frontier, negotiating
crumbling limestone walls
miraculously sutured, by the
ineffable potency of idealism
and dreams. in that moment,
i wished for greater endowments
than what was presently
granted me. i wished for the
ability to transplant memory,
for the unattainable gift of
appraising common suffering
and its derivative truths.
i was greedy, i wanted more.
i wanted more than what
the dessicated grasses of
inquiring after health and
one-sentence distillations
of life’s tumult had to offer.
so there we tarried, exchanged
smiles and pictures and
farewells, at the border,
where language doth come
to an end.
