Now and Always

Bill Tope

Over Christmas break,
my brother and I came
together to talk.

He had something he
wanted to discuss with
me: for my ears only.

After I heard him out,
I asked my brother,
“Why do you want to
be a woman?”

He replied, “Why
do you want me to
be what I’m not?”

I said, “I’ve known
and loved you for
your whole life.”

He came back with:
“Is it my gender identity
you love, or my soul?”

We spoke like this
late into the night,
till everyone else
was asleep.

He opened his heart
and allowed me to
see things I hadn’t
even suspected.

Come the morning,
over coffee, I told
my sister, “I love you
now and always...”
