My grandparents thought
that the roaring 20s
were the worst times ever
        the Charleston
        the flappers
        the Great Depression
My parents thought
that the 50s and 60s
were the worst times ever
        the sexual revolution
        the pill
        rock ‘n’ roll
I laughed at both
for mine was an

enlightened generation
        books were not banned
        we had the civil rights revolution
        we went to the moon
        we elected a Catholic President
        we elected a black President
        and we had free discussion of ideas
And now
        books are banned
        climate change is denied
        there was an insurrection
        the country is terribly divided
        there are mass shootings

These are the worst times ever!
