The Poison Ivy Tree

She never meant to entertain such a guest
          much less marry it
but it got a fingerhold when she wasn’t looking
busy pumping sap and putting out leaf
     before she knew it
she found herself embraced
               hidden behind poison ivy leaves
entangled in vines that extend impudent branches
          alienating passersby
          pretending it does so on her behalf.
