The Demon

Craig Kirchner

More often than I’d like to admit,
his Icarian musings keep me awake.
Once asleep, I’m not sure where he spends his time,
perhaps producing and directing,

performing surgery like the dream doctor.
He precisely anticipates my awakening,
as we meet every morning at the Keurig,
and he reminds me we like vanilla more than caramel.

He intuits the day’s schedule and feigns friendship,
sharing an understanding of our options
and limitations. He is patient in the shower,
likes clean, but realistically, he is tortured,

until we put pen to paper, and then even more so.
He only seems happy when we have fulfilled his passion,
and filled the pad, cliché free,
with punctuated, gray indulgences.

He has a slight smile now as we begin to edit,
and suggests we may be ready for a re-evaluation
of the day’s priorities, perhaps hit some balls,
perhaps a bourbon with an Urquell chaser.
