It’s Not A Cult

John Louis Smith

Noon, June, 2016.
He ambled into the store, faded
jeans, oily white shirt, red ball cap perched
on his gray head. When he bought
his lunch he took his change, dropped
the pennies in the small blue tray.
I did my democratic thing for the day, he said
in a slow, sleepwalking way.
Thank you, I said.
Trump is going to win, he said.
Thank you, I said.
He’s going to make America wonderful again, he said.
Have a nice day, I said.
For his drink, I remember he bought
a six-pack of Kool-Aid.
