Corn Chips

Sam Kilkenny

I used to stay with a woman off Clarke Street
she had nasty breath and body odor and
her house smelled like corn chips
each night after sex
I snuck out of bed and slept on the couch
I wrapped my coat around my face like a turban
creating a wind tunnel through which to breathe
the coat made the house smell like cigarettes
it was the only way I could sleep in that place
love is the only emotion that is impossible to fake but
some people are so lonely they let you fake it anyway
and In the morning I snuck back into bed
held my breath
wrapped my arm around her waist
and we both pretended to not know what I was doing
as the sun came up over the city.
