by cops with nightsticks for dancing
in the While Castle hamburg restaurant,
riots threatened, nine black men
in five years: they laid him out
on the floor, recall the mayor; last time
was Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, forced
lesson in Civics, now Bush is giving
a speech about trees, I’m not kidding,
he thanks a Rolling Stone for support, says
he’s a keyboardist and a gardener,
a tree farmer, the whole room claps
when they switch GW off. Which parable
is it when the last ones that show up
take home the same pay? Talents?
