Vacancy
For Jerry Hall
C Ra McGuirt, 3rd draft August 3, 09
We both had been enjoying the start of a second friendship
When his brother wrote me and told me that he’d died.
I can’t tell you all about him, but you may see his signs,
Depending on the inns you pass
By day, or stay in on your business nights.
Some say I go to Death too often when I want to write a song
I wasn’t planning this one, but would like to walk a little way along
With a friend who’s leaving, wondering if we were robbed of time
Or given all those extra days
as a gift and reason for this rhyme?
Glenn, we sang together in our youth, and
though we never grew to stars,
I’m glad we failed together. Can you tell me how’s the weather where you are?
I count the unexpected months that neither of us knew we’d get to know
As the second encore for a fitting finish
To our final unattended show.
I’d tell them more about you and the craft you came to choose
But I don’t in speak sign language, so this will be the best that I can do.
Your light is going off as the sun begins to rise, and I am lost
For a final line, but this song is the sign
I designed for you. I’ll see you, Boss.
