The Distances

I awake,
crying and in a cold drench,
to an eerie tapping noise,
sharply reflecting an impression, three-dimensional, from the walls
as a chill in our bedroom
is marked by the wintry lace
of a two a.m., half-opened window,
and I am cut into shreds
like a blood-stained sheet of notebook paper
as I lie here alone
in an unfamiliar bed without you,
littered nightly with our unfulfilled dreams,
haunted by the fact that
your illness was extremely unkind to you....

just like I was.
