Hurry Up and Wait

Can’t wait for the week to end
I overheard
Just got to make it through
He said
And as I took another drag of my cigarette
Out in the cold
I wondered
How many people live
By waiting
And not knowing they are already
Dead
They aren’t waiting for the weekend
Or to return to empty rooms
And empty beds after shift

They are waiting on the grave
To be bathed in fluids
That will allow them
To wait longer
