Confirmation

Boghos L. Artinian MD

Every father is a hero, unconfirmed,
to his children.
Our father ‘was the best cyclist’
in the Summers,
and ‘the best tobogganist’
in the Winters
of Talas, his birthplace in Turkey.
To confirm this one had to ask citizens
of Talas; difficult to come across
for they were either killed or uprooted
during the genocide of 1915,
and the survivors were widely scattered
in the Diaspora.
One day we met two old survivors
of Talas, by chance on a bus.
And the first thing they said was
that our father had been the best cyclist
and the best tobogganist in Talas.
Thus, to our great delight,
our father’s claims were confirmed.
