Louder and Noisier

Christopher Hivner

The party has gotten crowded,
too many people
in the room
with drinks in their hands
and nothing in their eyes,
talking out of turn,
tongues hiding behind their teeth
like vipers.

The telephone rings
but I can’t find it,
the phone rings
and someone says hello,
a voice that I recognize
when hours turn to days
without sleep.

The voice lulls me
like white-cap waves,
but doesn’t convince me
because I have blood
in my veins,
salt in my eyes,
and I am an idiot
on my throne.

The party is too crowded,
I can’t keep the smoke
off of my skin
or my eyes off of
the women.
Where did I
disappear to?
