Change of Life

Deni Ann Gereighty

It’s a proper cookie sheet
although my life is not.
Twenty-five years working
nights and evenings
four years of hospital stays
nursing home residence
and the rhythm of home health nurses
mark me indelibly.

At 1 AM I am awake
not even a pain cocktail
will sing me slumber.
Daylight hours are for sleeping
nights are for keeping vigil.

Babies to be birthed
kept me busy once
Elder before my time
I keep watch for pain
insure the sun will rise
take out the cookies
before they burn.
