Holly Day

my son comes home from my mother’s house
and informs me
there’s no such thing as Santa Claus
and I am crushed, I am devastated, he is five
and I got to believe in Santa
until I was nine. “Grandma’s senile,” I console him
he is being so brave and so grave, it’s all I can think, I want
to tell my mom she can never see him again, punish her,
make her see
how hard this day is for me
because no amount of backpedaling
will make Christmas the same for us again
