What the Law calls
Grand Theft Auto is just
a 16-or-17 year old boy’s
personal rodeo with some
lawyer’s imported motor vehicle

And for his girlfriend for
whom everyone from her
teachers to her minister
expects to get pregnant
—she shoplifts their boutiques
and pinches jewelry from
their McMansions she cleans

And if between the two of them
the only book they read is some rural
American horror from Stephen King
—they’re both literate enough
to discern the next war that will
make one of them a flag-draped
casket-closed hero and the other
a fast-food cashier widow between
the advertisements for South African
diamonds and summer rentals at
the Vinyard or the Hamptons

And if the two of them will
never write more than
a couple of stolen checks

they both have enough
piss & vinegar and maybe
your credit card & Mercedes
to rewrite their future
and not the one
written by their country
