Silent Prayer
Valorie Mall
A single drop of blood
fell in mute, scarlet misery.
The man on his knees
Looked up silently pleading.
His questioning brown eyes,
Searching for mercy in another.
The butt of a rifle
Cracks in the silence again.
Horrid crunch of bone
Filling the morning air.
The man on his knees
Falls silently to the ground.
Now drops of crimson pattering down,
Filling the space where once was one.
The man on his knees
Raises hands in supplication
His innocent, bruised face,
Raises hopefully to his captors.
Praying for a merciful end to the agony,
While he knows there will be more.
