The Lights Are Off in Suburbia

The moon shines a brilliant silver
on the eve of summer
The wind whisks along
whistling as it passes the leaves
The TVs are off;
the last computer finally shut down
Only the mad ones linger in consciousness
meditating in rooms with near silent sitars
laughing as they smoke pot in a generic basement
Perhaps they’re off in the city, as some hipster’s bar on Broadway
conversing with Bacchus
The stars slip across the sky
as Earth floats through eternities of nothingness
Its nights like this you come to the sobering realization
that our lives are as inconsequential as they are meaningful
