A Ghetto Kaleidoscope

The summer evening
Was warm and breezy
Dissipating the smells
Of the inner city
As children played vociferously
In the middle of the street
Laughter echoed amidst
The seedy tenements
As gunshots sliced through the joy
Quieting the playful chatter
Sending children in all directions
A kaleidoscope rotating
The different little
Shapes, sizes and colors
Spreading them about
Leaving the streets empty
With only one color speck
Lying still in the middle
