Trying to Stay Awake

In order to stay awake
towards an authoritative figure,
like my parents, aunts, and cousins,
and show them that I’m a good listener
and an engaging individual,
I need to: hit myself until I bruise the cheek,
bite myself until I bleed from the finger,
stab myself multiple times on the leg,
and scream until the pain reaches their ears.
I don’t want to miss anything they tell me.
I want to show them that I’m a mature adult,
even when the life slowly drips from me.
