Don’t Shut Me Out
David Hernandez
While mountaineering
in the catwalk trail
of Gila National Forest, New Mexico,
I slipped on the edge of a cliff,
quickly grasping the rock.
Right above my head,
someone stretches his hand to save me,
yet I turn my head,
refusing to touch the hand of a man
who reminds me too much of the Cathedral men
I was forced to go to school with,
men who act without moral conscience,
men who know how to bully the heart of a fragile man.
Does he care what would happen if I would fall?
Of course, not! That’s why he moves his hand away,
while I fall. I’m sorry; at least I can be free of men.
I couldn’t even connect
to the daughter I most loved
or her future husband
I came close to understanding.
