The old magicians, the clowns,
and the seals in their oily coats,
have come to pay their last
respects to you.

White handkerchiefs, magic sticks,
red shoes, and yellow balls litter
the floor, are plunked on
the anteroom chairs.

Stale jokes and the sound of clapping
perfume the funereal air. It is like
smoke rising here.

You were the best. They all agree.
A magician’s magician who could
make anything seem.

But where is that lithe young girl
you cut in two with a saw, that red
queen with the shot-through heart,
my white rabbit you once won for
me at the county fair?

The white roses ride you, father,
like a horse blanket. A rosary glints.
I begin to count its black beads with
lowered eyes.

You are guilty of nothing now.
