Easter

Jenene Ravesloot

1

Father sits at the kitchen table. He’s
hung over again, chin smeared with
chocolate candy.

A headless chocolate bunny is plopped
on the red tablecloth.

Peep, peep, peep. I hear the peeps of
baby chicks that father has put in a card-
board box next to the stove.

I watch them claw cardboard sides, over
and over. I watch them struggle before
we leave for church.

2

Fox paws seem almost glazed with snow
at Easter time. Pin-thin muzzles and green
glass eyes stare back at me. Tender clasps
hold sagging pelts against aging necks as I
sit in my pew—I notice such things.

3

The congregation isn’t thinking about the One
who died on the cross. The congregation isn’t
thinking about the One who has risen.

They’re watching my father. He has just left
our pew to take a leak in the church bathroom.

4

I won’t forget how father burned my arms with
a silver spoon dipped in hot coffee. He laughs
about it. He thinks it’s a funny thing to do. He
always will.
