A real tall three
my downstairs neighbor
would play dolls with me after

I added and-a-half to two
and ‘portantly could translate
her talk in a code moms didn’t get.

Everyone always called
Mary Margaret
by both her first and middle names

as though just plain Mary
would break some link with parents
who chose her special,

gave her a silver cross
strung from a beaded necklace
she wouldn’t let me touch,

bought her navy blue plaid
jumpers so she’d be uniformed
exactly right for school,

taught her on Saturdays
her daddy’s clubby game of golf
and entered her in tournaments,

invited me along one Sunday
when she went to First Communion
all in angel-white chiffon,

moved her way off to a big house
where her dolls soon stopped
crying over tea for mine.

Teens, we meet again by chance.
Pals call her Margie now—
extra blonde, all made up, in code.
