Practicing Tom Roby My stepdad and I fooled around with the pigskin every Sunday. I never knew why he threw passes for hours like Johnny Unitas- “Slant out five, cut right three.” “Fly twelve down, drift back.” The ball was always there on one side, or the other, too high, or too low-he never said where. But, when I made the jump to catch the Hail Mary that won the game, I thought I had done it on my own. We talked about how much I had practiced, then he asked, “Remember how I developed you?” Oh, when was that, I asked. Now I’m dad, tossing and catching to teach my son how to fake left, dodge right, take my over- the-shoulder pass, and thread down the sideline for his touchdown. I watch the games as he develops himself, turning my single fake into his own triple dodge that leaves the defenders in their socks as he expects the un- expected by working it inside himself-a sudden veer felt at the last minute. I never say, “I developed you,” exposing my yearning for recognition, but hope somewhere he might remember where he got his start in the tradition, as if I were Johnny Unitas, keeping my mouth shut about it. |
