Stuff of Dreams

    When we buried my stepdad my family came from south and west to toss his ashes off the small wharf where he had let down his crab traps for the past decade so I raised him to Shakespeare’s cloud-capped towers but couldn’t get the can open until my brother-in-law took a church key from his pocket and popped the lid so my sister with a sweep of her arm could arc a curtain of dust that hung in the air then hit the surface to rise again before his ashes sank into the cool and dust vanished into thin air but leaves me angry and ashamed as I read this to see how I left out my fright when those ashes failed to sink right away.
