you promised nothing,
left me
with less

a swollen throat is not a present
of any value or real use
to anyone held at arm’s length though
no sleep,
no dreams
occurred
closing my windpipe with kisses,
wishing I were a boy.

(regardless) we are both
passengers aboard
the same flight that won’t land
and if our teeth never make it to shore
the checks will never be mailed.
