The silent church prepares
for many eyes to come inside.
Benches, more dusty and gray,
now filled with sitting ears
ready for hearing missals.
Wooden doors held shut,
the priest walks forth
and silence follows
the man on the cross.

Amazing Grace from choir

prayer proclaimed.
Rings, tones, and words from phones,
tears from crying babies,
lumber rotting off the frame
missals tearing pages off the spine
colored glass dying black
the confession stand
as hollow as an inner tree,
the pipe organ
a home for tiptoeing spiders and roaches,
sleeping heads,
blood orchid,
bloody stain.
