Patriotism
inoculates a community
against foreign invasion;
yet, when offensively applied,
it inflames the body politic,
and, like an immune reaction gone awry,*
afflicts healthy civic organs
such as freedom of thought
or speech,
or any constituent
rejecting the party line.
But then, sadly,
as the adage goes,
“Nobody’s ever lost an election
By waving the flag.”

* a not uncommon medical condition leading
�� to a variety of maladies, including Lupus.
