Career Girl

When she was younger,
a bull on the floor working
the hot new steak houses,
supper clubs, cabarets,
she liked to say these were
just stops on the way to
somewhere else so if I’m
still doing this in my 50s
I hope someone takes me out
behind the dumpster and shoots
me. Now, thirty something years
later, working swing shifts
in some nowhere diner,
not bothering to make her face
up, not bothering to wear
the cleanest clothes, mainlining
coffee and cigarettes, no one’s
come to take her out back yet
but she’s still hoping.
