A Little Life

When she died a broad chalk
Cracked the sky and thunder
Shivered billows of smoke

They knew the sequestered
Ways she darted through life
Always with a hanky or with alarm
Pressing logs against the door

She never had a secret chat
Or dressed a table with napkins
Meaningless remarks made her brood
And sometimes she peered to see in the mirror
Any sanity to pool her eyes

Such a little life consumed by rage
One night jagged sobs ignited the town
They heard just another woman’s
Rant and rave storm after storm

Wooden men, daughters running through
The spaces of stars for these wooden men
To lift warm spoons to their lips
