A boy chases light with a glass jar & thread-
ed Bell cap. His father close behind with pad
& pen, trying to capture the ghost of those
destined to become statues: marble, bronze,
bed of stones or perpendicular planks
to mark what’s been; the mason jar clicks
with lightning bugs & temper. Here is best,
the father tells the son, sit & rest. Breathing
at altitude, it’s not what you take in, but
what you can’t get out that makes you sick.
The boy sat & set the blinking jar between them.
Vale, hijo, just remember, he says, clicking
the back of a pen, to see & tell gently, handing
the pad to the boy. You’ll do fine, he says,
claiming the jar & slowly unscrewing the cap.
