Seeing like a poet

Robert Lawrence

My friend Bill looks at a wall
and sees metaphors.
I look at the same space
and see paint on drywall.
One day I stole his M-D glasses
(M is for metaphor). I put them on
and gazed at my living room wall
I saw Rimbaud’s dandruff.
I saw Kafka’s tears.
I saw Dali’s toenail cheese.
I looked longer, harder
The glasses began to hum
like the monolith in 2001.
I saw glistening neuronal networks
interlocking lattices of blood vessels
a skeleton mouthing a slice of toast
a twelve-string guitar with frets of fire
the history of a castle in Scotland
written on a decaying gourd
human life as a jigsaw puzzle
splattered by a giggling child.
I yanked off the glasses, snuck them back
into their slot in Bill’s attaché case.
He noticed my bloodshot psyche and told me,
“Keep your greasy paws off my fucking glasses.”
