of Margaret Court and Buteterly Strokes

Elizabeth Marino

It should be simple, a tennis ball’s arc,
O the rhythmic pulse of churning water
From butterfly strokes, each stroke a standard
Met through the lithe flesh of a woman athlete.

Listen. They are arranging the brass now,
Purcell strains run through national anthems.
Oh Mrs. Court, where did your gaze fall?
Does a simple arc sanction your deadly return?

As a girl, I was witness to your play,
On the green courts of Wimbledon, your home
Hard court Australian Open, your own
Olympic appearance – no mean feat.

Before her professional woman’s tour,
Before endorsements, Billie Jean King returned
Court’s volley with a forceful backhand
And a nod to character lobs, which continue.

I remember Heartland legislators
Raised the floor – no extramural girls’ sports!
“Could damage girls’ reproductive organs.”
Court would check a locker room gaze as sinful.

On different sides of an Australian civil rights hearing,
Billie Jean rose, then rose again.

Her serve preceded her.
This King loomed, a public figure, a role model. Each
Taught us pride in excellence, to play to win

The circle dial of a diamond Movado
The arch support of a top athletic shoe
The glossy green 4-color fashion campaign.
Brand names embrace the Union Jack’s snap.

Now watch grand slam champion Serena Williams step up,
After chronic illness. Her arms fell, weary too soon,
Then rose to Wimbledon double victories in 2012,
Her strokes light, fast and fierce.

Game.
