The First Casualty

Waging trial by media,
news anchors
comport like sportscasters
at a Roman coliseum
as, locked
in mock combat,
pundit-gladiators
playing to the throng
thrust at one another
never landing
that mortal blow;
the upshot being,
wounded by all sides,
truth,
their only casualty,
if not by any public ‘thumbs down,’
dies, mutilated,
on the ground.
