The fireman pulled the melon from the sheath,
and behind followed the gangling little mass
that must have wailed most un-fruitlike into
the rainy summer breath, still fleshly

connected to its mother whose innermost
was open for those ad hoc hands whose male owner
probably didn’t feel any urge to hop into her

while she was pushing out bloody, wrinkled
life so chained to that coupling impulse but now so
severed as the umbilicus soon would be
