The Effort

Kayla Cordone

Her youth was not ideal
Mom and Dad split early on
School was her day time prison
Yet she told herself it would be alright

Years later she was a rebellious teen
Smoking and drinking her problems away
Friends loved her clever disguise
Nobody knew what she really needed

Longing for someone to finally see
She wanted her family to be fixed
To not numb the pain with substance
She struggled to see the damage it caused

Attention was a craving not met
The less she got, the number she felt
Nothing mattered to her anymore

The drugs and booze filled her heart

Loneliness, meaningless sex, and money blown
She led a life that most did not dare
She could not stop even if she wanted to
It was the only thing keeping her alive
