The Strength of a Family History

The meat cleaver that father used
to chop in measured strokes for cooking
is the same one he pinned brother to the floor with,
the one I brandished to defend my life,
and mother used to stab father.
I will toss it away, bury it in a grave,
or maybe I will not be able to help myself
and will save it, sharpen the silver blade
start the cycle anew a dark
and twisted family heirloom.
