Shallow Affection

Brian Looney

In my drunken days,
women justly labeled me
a creeper.

Years later, some think
(with soulful eyes)
that I’m a keeper,
if you’ll excuse
the rhyme.

And as a mental exercise,
I take myself back some
years, to a time when
booze and blood were
intermixed,
and I know,
I know these
peach-faced
plums around
me would have
withered
at the sight
of it.

For they only love me
well-fed and amiable,
talented and humored,
spirited and full of health;
they only love me
as it’s easy,
and I guess that’s
only fair.
