i remembered not to miss you

scarred and charred
beyond recognition
my heart
had to remember how to
beat again
to beat past death into a new
life,
and the light almost hurt
worse than the darkness because
i could find solace in the
shadows;
they wouldn’t judge nor mock
my tears—
one day i woke to find
together the sun, the sea, the moon, the flowers, the
streams, the creeks, the trees, and the birds
had sewn me back together
so i could remember
birdsong nesting in my ears and the beauty of
autumn so i could sear through the
first winter without you;
which seemed lonelier than always without you there—
one day i woke up and the pain was gone
along with most memories of you
except the bad ones
so i remembered not to miss you.
