in the company of wolves
there is no sympathy,
and i know that perhaps better than any
who has not loved a wolf;
they turn on you
carry away your heart whilst you’re still breathing
force you to watch as they allow the other
animals to carry off your flesh and bones as if you’ve
never existed—
i could have laid there beneath the snow
he buried me in,
but i could not endure a life without purpose
so i rose again;
the pain was immense and the regrowth was terrifying
it felt like death all over again,
but it was necessary
so that i could bloom into a more radiant dream and flower
than i ever was
so that my fires burned so brightly that they’d never see
ending again—
i am the daughter of summer,
and i will never allow any winter or wolf
deceive me again.
