they hugged
pledging, “See you soon,”
accompanied
by bouncy waves
and gay good-byes
until, next day, each bemoaned
the other’s ‘fading fast;’
then, dispirited
by her own decline, both
uncomfortably wondered
who’ll stick around
for another visit?
