Killing Dandelions

Peter Martin

“The most effective
herbicide
is 2,4-D,
which causes
the dandelion’s cells
to divide itself
abnormally
so it grows
itself to death.”

--found poem

“Grows itself to death.”
Now there’s a concept
straight out of hell.
Imagine people
growing themselves
to death. Until
we’re ninety feet tall
and topple over,
victims of our own
gigantic size, with
two heads, say,
or six arms or
a pecker the size
of a boxelder trunk
swinging regally.
Or tits, say, like
warm trampolines.
Or picture a high
quivering sphincter
dropping murderous turds
from above the tree tops.
But scariest of all
would be the brain--
large, dark and devious--
dreaming up yet more fiendish ways
to kill simple dandelions.
